15 Photos That Will Make You Want to Visit Salzburg
Predominantly known as the birthplace of Mozart and the filming location for The Sound of Music, the Austrian city of Salzburg offers so much more. As Austria’s fourth-largest city, it’s on the smaller side but is still abundant with culture and charm. With one of the best-preserved city centers in Europe, Salzburg is lavish with music, art, architecture, history, and Alpine scenery. There is almost a magical, story-book presence in the air. I’ve visited twice and would return again in a second. Essentially, Salzburg is the city where you can almost always hear Mozart playing and smell warm strudel at all times.
I hope these photos will inspire you to add Salzburg to your next vacation itinerary!
The grounds of the Mirabell Palace (built in 1606) are covered in geometrically-arranged gardens and overlook the fortress on the top of the hill. The Sound of Music fact: Maria and the children sang “Do Re Mi” in the Mirabell Gardens and danced right up these steps!
A view from a trail with panoramas over the city and the Alps. It’s an easy walk and is accessible right from St. Peter’s Cemetery. I saved the exact coordinates of this photo spot—(47.7957275, 13.0516995)!
One of the main pedestrian streets in the Old Town. Mozart’s childhood home is just a block or two away!
Multiple pedestrian-only bridges overlook the Salzach River, the Old Town, and the fortress.
The Grünmarkt (street market) fills the square in front of the University Church every Monday to Saturday, where you can buy pretzels, cheeses, chocolate, pastries, and so many other yummy things!
The incredible Baroque interior of the Salzburg Cathedral, built in 774. The cathedral was accidentally bombed in 1944 during World War II, but luckily only the dome was damaged and was fully restored in 1959. Fun facts: Mozart was baptized here in 1756; The cathedral was only used for hay storage during Napoleon’s reign.
The view from the Hohensalzburg Fortress, built in 1077. According to Salzburg’s tourism website, it is the largest fully preserved castle in Central Europe.
A delicious cake from Schatz-Konditorei in the Old Town. I definitely recommend going to this tiny café and trying the local pastries.
The lively street market in the Old Town.
Residenzplatz Square and the Residence Fountain, which is the largest Baroque fountain outside of Italy. The Sound of Music fact: Maria sang some of “I Have Confidence” in this square when she splashed the fountain’s water!
Austrian noodles with cabbage and onions, or “karamellisierte krautfleckerl” in German, from my hotel’s café—Hotel Sacher Salzburg. This was so yummy that I had it twice at Sacher Café during my visit.
Another view from the fortress.
The interior of the University Church, which was built between 1694 and 1707. It has one of the most unique and unforgettable interiors of any church I have ever seen.
More pastries from Schatz-Konditorei!
Another amazing view from the fortress overlooking the river. Fun fact: Salzburg is sometimes called the City of Churches because it has so many! Just in this photo you can see multiple domes and spires among the mountains!
