Where I Stayed in Capri: Villa Fortivara
On the magical island of Capri is a residence called Villa Fortivara, owned by my cousin Lavinia and her family. The traditional Mediterranean style villa has been an essential part of her life since she was a child, as it was originally her grandparents’ Caprese home. Although located within walking distance of the island’s teeming main port, Marina Grande, Villa Fortivara is a serene hideaway.
The gated property is surrounded by a dreamy garden complete with pathways that fully wrap around the white plastered villa. Throughout the garden are several sets of tables and chairs, perfect for al fresco dining among the lemon trees. After a day of swimming and hiking, taking a refreshing dip in the pool feels like heaven, followed by a cool rinse in the outdoor shower among the bougainvillea. From the rooftop, you can gaze out at the breathtaking view of the jagged mountains and the rolling sea with the feeling of the warm, sun-drenched tiles under your feet.
The villa’s interior is as stunning as the outside and filled with Italian charm in the form of artwork painted by Lavinia’s mother, arched doorways, colorful handmade furniture, and azure and crimson tiled walls and floors. There are bowls of the richest peaches, cherries, and bananas waiting in the kitchen, where you can also prepare breakfast—an expresso and biscotti—before enjoying it at a table in the awakening garden and then heading out to secure a spot on the beach.
Villa Fortivara truly captures the essence of la dolce vita.
I had the most unforgettable time at Villa Fortivara celebrating Lavinia’s mom’s birthday, eating homemade dinner under the stars, and sipping limoncello.
